Counsellors
All of the youth counsellors have been carefully screened. We have all completed an extensive thirteen week training period of three hours per week. At the end of our training, we all must attend a final intensive weekend long skills building session. We go through continual information sessions, workshops and skills building activities to keep updated on the issues that affect us, and our callers, as youth.
Our training topics include:
- Team building
- Counseling Skills
- Mental Health
- Street Youth
- HIV/AIDS
- Eating Problems
- Substance Use
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI's)
- Sexual Identity and Homophobia
- Crisis Intervention
- Suicide
- Birth Control
- Relationships
- Youth Violence
During our training on these issues we discuss ways that we can support our callers to get any services you may require. In order to do this we build our knowledge and skills base on these issues through listening, discussing, debating and role-playing. We get our training from a wide range of experts (some youth, some adults) from youth service organizations across the city. We get support and feedback from our "coaches" who are youth with more experience volunteering with H.E.Y.Y.
